East Riding College was delighted to host the Copper Saucepan Awards on Monday 20 August.  The competition is now in it’s 12th year, run by Hull, Humber and East Yorkshire Hospitality Association (HEYHA)

Newly qualified chefs (less than 4 years of experience) are encouraged to enter by sending in a three-course dinner menu using the best of local food with either the starter or main course featuring local pork or seafood. The successful candidates then went forward to the Cook Off held at East Riding College.

Paul Vinsen, Chairman of HEYHA said “The competition is to encourage young chefs and enable them to showcase their skills and celebrate local East Yorkshire produce.”

Adam Rothery and Helen Mayoh (former East Riding College learner) were joint winners.  They both received a cash prize, a trophy and one day’s experience working alongside Colin McGurran, Chef Patron at the award-winning Winteringham Fields Restaurant.

Adam from Hull and working at Willerby Manor, said “Thank you to Chef, Ben Olley at the Willerby Manor who has helped train me all the way.  I had a nervous start and thoroughly enjoyed the day.”

Helen from Beverley and working at AAK said “I am over the moon, there was stiff competition with lots of good chefs in the area.  I am privileged to be in this position.”

Adam and Helen will now take part in the final at Beverley Food Festival on Sunday, 7 October.
