College launches apprenticeship prospectus

Young people and adults who would like to work as apprentices can find out more in East Riding College’s new apprenticeships prospectus.

Published this week, National Apprenticeship Week, the course guide tells prospective apprentices and employers about the benefits of apprenticeships as a way of working and studying at the same time.

Apprenticeships are available to new and existing employees across more than 180 job roles. They can be used as a way of recruiting and training up new people or to improve the skills of people who already work for a company.

Principal Derek Branton said: “More and more people are realising that apprenticeships are an excellent way to start their career, whether their ambitions lie in practical trades occupations, the service industries or a vast range of other roles.

“Apprenticeships provide a great opportunity to enter the workplace early and build up essential skills and experience while also gaining valuable qualifications to support future career progression.”

He added: “Employers are increasingly seeing the benefits of the apprenticeship model as a way of recruiting new staff or developing the skills of existing employees.

“National Apprenticeship Week is the ideal time to launch our new prospectus and I’m sure many young people, adults and employees will find it very useful.”

Apprentices spend the bulk of their working week doing their job, learning the skills that are essential to their business. They work towards a vocational qualification, which will be directly related to their ability to do the work, and also a technical certificate, which tests their knowledge of the subject.

They also learn key skills, such as literacy, numeracy and IT. The technical certificate and key skills are usually learnt during a day at College, though increasingly these are delivered in the workplace.

East Riding College provides an apprentice recruitment service to employers, advertising vacancies, interviewing and shortlisting applicants to ensure their new employee is hard-working, conscientious and a credit to their organisation.
