Collection of rare stamps up for auction

Thu 23rd January 2014

A collection of rare stamps is being auctioned off by Hawleys Auctioneers and Valuers, based in North Bar Within.

The stamps are expected to raise in excess of £4,000, and whatever money is raised will be given to Martin House Hospice, for special children and young people with life-limiting illnesses.

A Jamaican 5 Shilling stamp within the 12-book collection could raise as much as £2,000 by itself, such is its rarity. The stamp, which has a perforated edge, was issued to commonwealth countries.

Another moneymaker could be a book of stamps to commemorate the silver wedding, which it is hoped could raise £600.

The stamps were donated to Hawleys Auctioneers and Valuers, and it was asked that the final amount be given to Martin House Hospice.

The auction is at Beverley Racecourse on 9th February, starting at 11am.
