Bring us your old electrical items for recycling: Collection events to be held across East Riding

Residents will be able to bring their old, unwanted and broken electrical items for recycling to a series of collection events due to be held in the East Riding in October.

Waste and recycling officers from East Riding of Yorkshire Council will be visiting towns and villages to collect residents’ small electrical items – including kettles, toasters, radios and power tools – so they can be sent for recycling and reuse.

The electrical goods amnesty events will start in the Brough and Hessle areas on Monday October 7, and will continue on to the Holderness, Bridlington and Goole areas.

The events are being held to encourage residents not to place electrical items in their bins at home.

Each year thousands of electrical items are found in the waste collected from residents’ blue and green bins – but they can’t be recycled that way.

Instead they can be taken along to the collection events or to any of the East Riding’s 10 household waste recycling sites, which are open every day from 10am to 5pm.

Previous amnesty events held in April and May this year, and in September last year, collected a total of 2.5 tonnes of small electrical items.

That is the equivalent in weight of two Ford Fiestas!

Items which can be brought along for collection – no larger than a microwave - include:

Toasters, kettles, irons, food mixers, blenders, sandwich makers, coffee machines, hairdryers, hair straighteners, electric toothbrushes, electric razors, mobile phones, laptops, desktop computers, printers, radios, game consoles, DVD players, chargers, speakers, remote control toys, table lamps, electric fans, electric heaters, and power tools including drills.

Most of the electrical items donated will be taken to local household waste recycling sites, where they can be sent for recycling.

But if they are still in good working order they could be donated for resale to the Dove House charity Reuse Shop at the Humberfield household waste recycling site at Hessle.

Councillor Chris Matthews, the council’s portfolio holder for strategic management, said: “The electrical amnesty events we’ve held previously have been very popular and have even resulted in a 15% increase in the amount of electrical items taken to our household waste recycling sites.

“That’s equivalent to 10 tonnes of electrical items collected each month, which is a fantastic result.”
