Beverley & East Riding Golf Club's Anti Mill AmAm was an outstanding success with more than £3,000 raised by the 38 contributing teams to help repair and renovate the club's landmark building.

Thankfully, the club now has access to the funds it needed to start work on the urgent task of sealing the roof, which really needs to be done before the worst of the winter weather arrives.

Club Captain Steve Mooney said: ''Thanks to all those who helped make the day go so well. There was much praise again for the condition of the course, the bar and catering, the prize table and the organisation of the event.

'It's a bit of a cliché but this really was an occasion where taking part was more important than winning so everyone who took part and helped make the day a success can consider themselves a winner.

'It was obviously a cause that got the golfing community pulling together and it was very rewarding that apart from entry fees, there were several impromptu voluntary contributions throughout the day.''

The winners were a team of ice hockey players from Hull - Chris Reader, Andy Daintiff, Stuart Draper and Chris Swyer - who came in with a remarkable score of 30-under par to pip Beverley member Mick Manterfield's team, who themselves were 25 under par.

They were chased home by Mike and Pete Robson, Gavin and Brandon Cowley followed by Captain Mooney's squad of Ron Garrett, Neil Muir and Andy Webster.
