Adult courses in the new year

Mon 15th December 2014

Beverley's Adult Learning Centre is now taking enrolments for the dozens of courses starting in the New Year.

Anyone who wants to learn new skills, gain new qualifications or improve their career prospects will be able to choose from a range of subjects, such as computing and tablets, counselling skills, drawing and painting, guitar for beginners (acoustic and electric), pottery, patchwork and quilting, photography for beginners, cake decorating and psychology.

Many of these courses start on or around 12 January, but a large selection of courses can be done at any time. Courses such as maths, English and IT, from basic computer drop-in sessions to more advanced ECDL courses, can be joined at any time during the academic year. Take a look at the online course guide for more information at www.eastriding.gov.uk/learn.

If you have recently been made redundant or are unemployed, the council also has a specialist team who can advise on free training that you might be eligible for as well as offering apprenticeship training in business and administration, customer service and IT/software/web and telecoms professionals training. The authority’s apprenticeship pool will be open over Christmas for people to apply for vacancies with local East Riding businesses.

Sara Arnold, employment, education and skills group manager at the council, said: “There’s something for everyone at one of the seven adult learning centres across the East Riding.

“We want people in the East Riding to make sure that they have the right skills to open up new opportunities in life and work and truly reach their potential. So, whether you’re looking to learn for work or pleasure, join us and be among 4,000 local learners who benefit from education and training from us each year.”

Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for economy, investment and inequalities at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Providing quality adult education provision is a key priority for the council in supporting and growing the local economy by ensuring our residents have the necessary skills to achieve their aims and ambitions, whether that be securing employment or access to higher education or in setting up their own business.

“With the start of a New Year comes a new opportunity to learn and develop, so why not take a look at the courses available and enrol at one of our learning centres in 2015.”
