Beverley Athletic Club is organising a one-off event to celebrate the forthcoming opening of Beverley's new Southern Relief Road - the Minster Way 5K Run.

In conjunction with main partner, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and main sponsor Balfour Beatty, Beverley AC are seizing on the opportunity to stage a run for the whole community over this very popular distance of 5 kilometres, on a traffic free, relatively flat road.

Sunday 1 March at 10am will see hundreds of runners on the start line with the first chance to see the new road ahead of its official opening. The route will take runners from the western end of Minster Way, along the whole stretch of the new road, over Long Lane and the railway line, towards the A1174 at the eastern end. Runners will then return on the other side of the road to the finish line near to where they started.

Race director Andy Tate is delighted that the three parties have been able to agree this unique run and is keen to urge as many local people as possible to participate.

"Five kilometres is an achievable target for many people to run and it doesn't matter if you need to walk for a while. The main point is that you are taking part, whether it takes you 15 minutes or 45 minutes," he said.

Race secretary Jayne Dale said: "We are expecting a really good response and are currently finalising our plans to ensure the day is a big success. Risk assessments will be completed and medical back up will be available to meet the requirements of the race permit issued by UK Athletics.”

The entry fee is just £5, which includes electronic timing, refreshments and a commemorative memento for all finishers. The number of entries will be limited to 500 runners and registration will be available online from 23 January 2015 on www.sportsentrysolutions.co.uk/allraces.php

David Lowther, Contracts Manager, Balfour Beatty said: “Balfour Beatty actively looks to engage with the local community on all its projects. Our involvement in the Minister Way 5K run has given us a great opportunity to open up this fantastic new development to the community.”

More information will be available soon on the club's website www.beverleyac.com
