East Yorkshire foodbank is appealing to the public with a #40for40 campaign - to give up 40 pence for 40 days for Lent.
The anti-poverty charity distributes food parcels from its Beverley hubs to people in the East Riding of Yorkshire, going hungry on a weekly basis.
The team is asking local people to start collecting 40 pence each day in a jam jar, a total of £16 - costing less than a take away coffee each week throughout this time.
Annemarie Foster, Chair of the East Yorkshire foodbank says:
“With Gift Aid added on, East Yorkshire foodbank will receive £20 from each donor. Quite often people give something up for Lent and may also want to donate the cost of their savings to us as well.”
“The money we raise will be used for vital practical items that we need to pay for such as; insurance, vehicle costs, racking and shelving for the stock, signage and workwear, etc.”
“We are delighted with the public response to our recent awareness campaigns. People are coming forward to help with overwhelming generosity. We received over seven tonnes of food donations in our Christmas campaign, which meant we needed extra storage space and this has been kindly donated by a local business.”
“Our new appeal will help us to keep the charity running in Beverley. We are fortunate to have many volunteers who give up their time to help us in the hubs; managing stock, packing the parcels, distributing the parcels to the families and individuals who need it. However, with no other financial support, we are concerned that without any funds, it may affect our operations.”
“Sadly we are providing a vital resource to some people living in the East Riding. People who find for a variety of reasons that they are unable to provide everything they need.”
“Our parcels often include seasonal items, Easter eggs have been coming in and we are pleased to be able to supply treats along with the regular tinned items.”
Cash and cheque donations can be taken into the Mill Lane Hub in Beverley at 87 Mill Lane. Alternatively donations can be made online at www.eastyorkshire.foodbank.org.uk/donate-money
