Looking Beyond photography competition

If a picture speaks a thousand words then this competition and the resultant travelling exhibition will help communities in our region gain significant insight into the challenges faced by people with dementia. It hopes to also create understanding as to how they may help make life easier. The competition has just been launched during Dementia Awareness Week in May and closes on 12th August. The resultant show will travel through the region for six months between late September and April 2018.

Two Ridings Community Trust is supporting Dementia Friendly East Riding in asking photographers old and young, professional and amateur to see if they can illustrate a message of hope. The competition, which is free to enter, is designed to increase people’s awareness of dementia, challenge misconceptions and highlight DFER’s hopes for all those affected by the condition. Photographers are asked to consider a relevant caption to accompany their photograph, although this is not necessary. The accompanying photos show examples of this by photographer Lynne Wilson.

Nigel Walker, a Trustee of DFER says “We are seeking photographs from which we can select the best pictures to form part of the exhibition. Winners will have their images displayed over a six to nine month period from September 2017 at exhibition venues throughout the East Riding and Hull where we expect at least ten thousand people to see them. There are no prizes but your work will be widely seen in the area. And you will be helping draw attention to aspects of the challenges people with this condition and their carers face. Judging will take place in late August with a panel of photographers, people with dementia and professionals. DFER is also grateful for the professional help given by Viewfinder Photography Society whose ongoing support and advice is invaluable.
