The Gansey Girl

The Gansey Girl artist added to talk and workshop at Bridlington Central Library

The artist behind Bridlington’s celebrated The Gansey Girl sculpture will be giving a talk about his work at an event at Bridlington Central Library next week.

Steve Carvill, who designed the bronze statue, has been added to the line-up of a talk and workshop on the history of ganseys – traditional fishermen’s jumpers – which is taking place at the library on Tuesday 23 May at 2pm.

Mr Carvill will give a short presentation about the artwork, which was unveiled on Bridlington Harbour in 2015.

He will join Fred and Carol Walkington, who will present a fascinating talk on the history of ganseys, the hard-wearing knitted garments which date back generations and were designed to keep fishermen warm and dry out at sea.

Carol will bring along ganseys she has knitted herself and will offer help and advice to anyone wanting to knit their own gansey.

The event will take place upstairs in the meeting room at Bridlington Central Library at 14 King Street.

Admission is free and all are welcome.
